A Balcony Retreat for Summer Nights

Posted in Home, Interior & Exterior

For those living in apartments, summer nights are often uncomfortable. Sweltering heat and a sense of suffocation frequently lead to sleeplessness. For those facing this, I want to share a way to create an escape hatch for both physical and mental peace. That escape is the balcony already found in most apartments.

Why the Balcony?

Why is the balcony the perfect escape? In urban areas like Yangon, buildings are often crowded together, and apartments may lack windows with good airflow. In this situation, the balcony becomes the best spot for ventilation. However, most people use their balconies for drying clothes or storing old junk, making them cluttered and unfit for relaxation. Let's change that and transform the balcony into a neat, clean sanctuary.

Clearing the Balcony

The first step is clearing out the items on your balcony. If you are storing things you don’t use, get rid of them. Items piled up "just in case" are rarely ever used later. If you have essential boxes or items, stack them neatly against one corner of the wall. This clears the airway and creates more space. Once cleared, give the floor a thorough wash.

Setting Up Your Relaxation Spot

If you prefer resting in a high-back chair, you don't need much preparation. However, if you want to lie down and relax, a few adjustments are needed. The most affordable and effective option is a traditional Myanmar bamboo mat. It is breathable, stays cool, and is far more comfortable than the bare floor. Other modern options include thin foldable mattresses or cooling mats (refrigerant mats).

Another factor to consider is the mosquito problem. While a balcony-sized mosquito net is an option, it can slightly restrict airflow. Mosquito coils are fine if placed carefully away from your direct breathing path. Alternatively, you can use mosquito repellent lotions or keep an electric mosquito bat nearby. Lighting also plays a role.

Setting up a space that is neither too dark nor too bright helps manage the mosquito issue and creates a great ambiance. Rechargeable lanterns or LED string lights powered by a power bank are excellent choices. Additionally, plants like Aloe Vera can purify the air and soothe the mind, though this is an optional touch if you have the extra space.

Keeping the Balcony Cool

There is a trick to making the breeze even cooler while you rest. Soak a large cloth, like a towel or bedsheet, in water and wring it out well. Hang it on the side where the wind blows into the balcony. This adds moisture to the incoming breeze, making it feel much cooler. Finally, always keep the balcony tidy; a well-ventilated space is key to reducing the temperature.

We hope this helps you create a balcony retreat for those hot summer nights. May you pass through this summer with a cool body and a peaceful mind!
