Ways to Extend Your Attention Span

Posted in Lifestyle, Personal Development

The “Scrolling Culture”, the habit of constantly swiping up and down on our phones, has become a hallmark of modern life. A common side effect of this culture is a significant decrease in our “Attention Span.” If you find yourself unable to finish reading a book or struggling to watch a movie until the end, you are likely experiencing a decline in your attention span.

The Negative Effects of Reduced Focus

While it may not feel significant while scrolling through your phone daily, a shortened attention span becomes a major obstacle when you need to focus deeply on work or learn a new skill. Additionally, it can lead to emotional blunting, rapid mood swings, and other mental health issues that can negatively impact your social relationships.

How to Solve the Problem of Focus Loss

Improving your focus is much like exercising to strengthen your muscles; your brain requires regular training. In today’s world, focus decreases because we frequently receive “bursts” of dopamine, the feel-good hormone, just by scrolling through our phones. Consequently, the brain begins to misinterpret long-term tasks as exhausting chores rather than normal activities. We need to correct this.

1. Practice Focusing on One Task at a Time

Some people pride themselves on “multi-tasking,” or doing two or three things at once. In reality, the human brain is designed to focus on one thing at a time. Trying to do too much simultaneously prevents you from focusing deeply on anything and can actually strain the brain. Practice committing to a single task until it is finished. This includes avoiding the habit of checking your phone while watching a movie!

2. Allow Yourself to Be Bored

Moments where you have “nothing to do” or feel “bored” are a natural part of life. Wasting these moments by mindlessly using your phone provides no real benefit and only adds to the negative cycle. Allow yourself to experience boredom. When you use your phone, do so with intention, not simply as a default reaction to boredom.

3. Start by Finishing a Physical Book

Cultivate the habit of finishing a physical book rather than an E-book. You don’t have to read it all in one sitting; start with just a few pages a day. Narrative fiction or captivating literature can be particularly helpful here, as the desire to know what happens next keeps you engaged.

4. Turn Off Non-Essential Notifications

Aside from phone calls and personal messages, you should turn off as many app notifications as possible. Otherwise, you may find yourself checking a single notification and ending up trapped in hours of unplanned screen time.

5. Ensure Your Body is Functioning Well

Focus is like “software,” and your body is the “hardware.” If the body is unhealthy or not functioning optimally, your focus will naturally decline. This is often linked back to excessive screen time, which leads to a sedentary lifestyle and irregular sleep patterns, factors that further erode your ability to concentrate. Therefore, getting consistent sleep and exercising regularly are vital steps.

Try these methods to expand your attention span. Once you do, take a moment to savor the satisfaction of completing a hard day's work or the deep resonance of finishing a great book or movie. You will find that life becomes much more meaningful.
